[Shotimes] Bigger A/C problems?

Well, it may be worse than I thought.
I just went out and tried the A/C again. I heard the clutch engage (I think)
so I don't believe that's the problem. The other thing I heard really scares
me. It's a loud, low-pitch screeching noise. It lasted about 4 seconds the
first time the clutch engaged. I turned it off, and tried it again, and it
made the same noise for about 1 second.
I get the feeling my compressor may be toast. Any thoughts?
If my compressor is bad, will I damage anything by driving the car? Obviously
there's no need to turn the A/C on ;^) What about the whole pulley system. I
need the accessory belt to run smoothly for power steering, alternator, etc.
Even if the compressor is bad/damaged will the pulley spin freely?
