I see the valve shim check as more of a surface check, than a clearance
check. It's true hardly any will be out of spec, but it's more than just
checking the clearance. Inspecting the surface of the shim will sometimes
be useful, as even well cared for cars can have a couple of shims start to
come apart. In all the 60k's I've done, I'd say 80% of the shims I've
changed were due to them falling apart, and probably 95% of them were still
in "spec".

It's my theory the rear head gets really beat up thermally, it's not vented
as well as the rear. Typically you find more shims/cams falling apart in
the rear, as well as leaking valve covers and plug well seals as you do the
front. So especially if you live in a warm climate, it's not a bad idea to
see what's going on. I did a 60k on a guy's 93 that had 3k oil changes, but
no service of any type till 92,000 miles. Motor was as clean as anything
you'll find, but the rear head had both cams falling apart, and a couple of
shims that fell apart. Who knows when it happened, but it's possible if it
was caught 30k sooner he wouldn't have had to pay several hundred bucks more
to have the cams replaced.

Also at last check, my 89 turned up a handful of shims on the rear head that
were falling apart, and this was before 60,000 miles when I installed the
3.0L cams in that motor (rear head). Granted the car is raced a lot, but I
typically change oil before 2500 miles in that car. You never know...
