Exactly! I ahve a '96 Saturn SL2 with 145,000 miles on it that burns a quart
of oil every 300 miles. It has doen so since approximately 75,000 miles or so.
I have receipts from oil changes by the Saturn dealer every 3,000 miles. When
I got it with 40,000 miles, it burned a quart every 1,000 miles or so and has
progressively otten worse.

My SHO, however, uses a quart every 4,000 miles. It has 180,000 miles on it.
My new TDI used 1/2 a quart in 6,000 miles so far.
