That about sums it up for trucks. Back in the mid-80's, trucks were trucks.
Didn't have all the frue-frue (sp?). By the late-80's/early-90's, the
manufacturers started tarting up their trucks (sure, you could get a Lariat
or a Silverado before, but you could still go out on a dealer lot and buy a
work truck). From about the mid-90's on, I have yet to see a work truck
(vinyl seats, basic V8, basic looking interior, steel wheels). Now all I
see when I visit a dealer's lot are custom trucks, manufacturer custom
packages, 18"+ wheels, leather interiors, $30k+ price tags. I once asked
about a truck that could actually do some work (sorry, I don't think I would
like to get my greasy clothes on a nice leather interior), and what the
price would be. The salesperson just gave me a blank stare, and said no
dealer sells trucks like that anymore, except through their fleet sales (if
they do fleet sales). Well, guess what, I couldn't buy through their "fleet
sales" because I only wanted a "fleet" of 1. They wouldn't even allow me to
piggyback an order on another fleet order.
Now, if this isn't displacement of lower-income (or in my case, CHEAP!)
people, what is? :-)
