[Shotimes] OT Starting Fluid: Good or Evil?

No. The '84 engine was called the H.O., and it was used in Monte Carlo SSs
and the Z28. It was the computerized Quadrajet. The 305 Cross Fire was in
earlier Z28s as an option. Corvette had the 350 Cross Fire in '84. Nothing
"wrong" with it, unless you really like Corvettes that run in the 15s and
were no quicker than 5.0 Mustangs in those days.

The TPI was a good motor. I had an '85 Vette with the 350 TPI, then an '86
Z28 with the 305 TPI, and both were good, although the 305 had a better
powerband that at least made power to over 5K (unlike the Vette, which was
all done at 4,500).

Replacing the distributor sounds incorrect, because there was a PCM in the
'84s (my buddy tried a chip in it, which did nothing!), but I can't say for
sure. Doesn't make sense that the distributor would control the car, but
stranger things have happened!

I should clarifythat he replaced the plugs because I "ruined" them with
the starting fluid. He had to replace the distributor (I'm told) because
there was something between it and the "computerized" carburetor, so when he
replaced that carb, he replaced the distributor.

In 84 wasn't it the Cross-Fire V8's that were the problem? I had an 85
Camaro with the Tuned Port Injection that ran quicker than Michael Jackson
to a day care for young boys.

I still would like to hear the explanation of how starting fluid can
kill a
distributor. On second thought, maybe not, as I would probably be
less-than-charitable in my comments as I hear the absolute nonsense
echoing
from the vacuum between his ears.....

Your comment hit it on the head, though. Those '84 Quadrajets were
really a
srange bird.....they had redimentary computer controls plumbed in to run
the
secondary metering rods and a few other things. It was the year before
the
TPI hit the market. Good friend of mine had an '84 Z28 with that POS.

Now, if that was the original carb, the new carb could very well have
solved
the problem. The only issue with "Mr. Grease Monkey" is what older carb
did
he use? Possibility exists of one that is jetted too rich or too lean,
which
will cause it's own set of problems. Besides, if the car is in good,
original condition, you may want to rebuild the stock carb to keep it
original. I trust that you hgot the parts back?

She trusts the opinion of Mr. Grease Monkey? Is he just working there
temporarily until Roger Penske can get an opening for an elecronics tech
on
one of his race teams? Pretty bad when you have to settle for working at
a
    place called "The Grease Monkey"!!

Since I am just the computer guy and her friend is all knowing (lol)
about
cars she let him fix it. He took of the carb that came with it (he says
that this was one of the first years that GM started to deal with
computers
dealing with the carb) and replaced it with an older "non computerized"
one.
He also replaced the dis! tributer and plugs, since, you know, I ruined
them
    with the starting fluid.

To his credit, the car now runs. But I wonder if a finger got amputated
    because of a paper cut.

I also understand that starting fluid is behind all the unrest in the
Middle
    East.

Thanks for EVERYONES feedback. I love nothing more than to be proven
right.
