All of the above. In reality a good system is just that; and the weakest
link will drag it down. A clean amp, with the most power you can afford
will help, good speakers will make an amazing difference, and the head unit,
well.............anything is an improvement. I'm sure the manufacturers
don't pay more than a buck or 2 for each speaker; Parts Express, among
others has a good selection of replacement speakers that will open your
eyes.

Head unit. I'd probably put an Alpine in it first; $200 will buy all the
sound quality necessary.
