Of course the solution is to just tell people that if they 
give you a "deposti" that the deposit is non-refundable and 
make up a short form with that included on it, and have the 
prospective buyer sign it.  Also, set a date for the final 
payment/pickup, so you aren't left hanging.  Make that no 
more than a week or so.

If they balk, just do what I do, is tell them that I will 
sell to the first person that comes up with the money, and 
don't ask for a deposit.  If it is someone I know, I will 
hold the car for an agreed upon time period, but not for a 
stranger.
