Sorry Ian, the T56 is a 6-speed 'box. I don't think ANY aerostar came with
a 6-speed :-)
Yes, some Aerostars DID come with a manual option, and it was a T5. These
are not like the T5's that the Mustang V8s used. The T5's found behind the
90-degree V6's (3.8L, 4.0L) are different than those found behind the small
sixes and the 4-cylinders, as they had a different bellhousing and input
shaft (they share these with the V8). The small 6, and 4-cylinder T5's
share a common bellhousing and input shaft.
I wouldn't want to use the V8 gearbox behind a V6, as the ratios are all
wrong for the powerband, and a 0.62 5th gear would be useless. Sure, you
can get virtually any ratio for a T5, but there is more work involved
getting a V8 T5 to work with the SHO than there is with using a T5 from
turbocharged Ford (prefered) or using a T5 from a 4-banger or Vulcan V6.
