[Shotimes] AMSOIL By-pass filter

There is another "expert". Although you may not regard him as highly as
you do Doug, Scott Patterson (known well to those who frequent the SHO
Forum) has torn apart many, many V6 SHO engines. He, too, has seen the
effects of what sometimes occurs with SHO engines that are fed nothing
but synthetic oils. He has pictures of his cam lobes, at 265k miles, as
well as many others that have been on strict diets of dino oil, and has
seen no signs of cam lobe wear (on well-maintained engines). On the
other hand, he's seen numerous synthetically-lubed cam lobes that show
significant wear (isn't even just a little bit considered significant?).

Now, I don't think I've ever heard Scott say anything bad about any
particular oil. He just notes what he's seen, advises people to look at
the condition of his engine with 265k miles, and lets them make their
own educated decisions.

I still like to use Mobil 1 in the winter. I like knowing the oil is
ready to move and lubricate after my car sits out in the cold all day.

No way would I use it all year. It appears there are no problems with
using good dino oil (Scott uses Castrol GTX exclusively, although he may
have recently switched to the high-mile formula) and if my car sees 265k
miles and the engine is in the condition Scott's is, I'll be a happy
camper. By the way, Scott just replaced his rod bearings, although he
heard no noises indicating he should, and found surprisingly (in my
opinion) little wear, when compared to other pictures I've seen passed
around.

Carpe diem,

Let me guess, local expert was Doug Lewis?

He is the only person I have heard bad mouth synthetics. My cams look
good after 169K miles on synthetic. The rod bearings have been replaced
but I abused my oil several times (ran 50,000 miles on one filter and
one oil change).
