I believe this "advice" started back in the mid to late 80s with the GM
overdrive transmissions. They were notorious for hunting back and forth, in
and out of overdrive when driving around town. I'm pretty sure GM actually
said in their owner's manual to leave it out of overdrive unless you were on
the freeway.
That problem was resolved a long time ago though.
