I could (and should) write a book about how fast to go when, and where.
Been a "professional speeder" for 20+ years driving 45-55k a year.
A) A good radar receiver is good, necessary, but a big buck one isn't
necessary
B) Get a police scanner if you drive in good weather. The cops only do the
aircraft speed traps in good daylight weather. The usefulness otherwise
varies by state, and some states (Michigan) use digital, so you can't hear
the cops at all.
C) I still have a CB Radio. In States were the speed limits for trucks is
still 55, the truckers will usually keep good track of the cops. They seem
to be happy if their limit is 65-70 and don't say much then. Hard to listen
because the only way to hear anything at all is with the squelch wide open.
I am used to that because I have had a CB in my car (the first was the '58
TR3A) since they had tubes and you HAD to use call signs (18W7205 then
KHC6237 and then again KWP7400).
D) Most important is to keep your own eyes peeled on the oncoming traffic.
Learn what may be a cop and slow down. Even in my MTX I keep my left foot
poised just above the brake petal. Remember that radar does not read your
speed if it is changing by more than 5MPH/second. I.E. a quick, firm and
steady jab to the brakes, even from 100+, the radar will not read your speed.
You must have h some discipline get from 100 to legal and not have your
speed register on this device, but it is very possible. The cop may still
pull you over, but other than you admitting your guilt, they will have no
evidence, other than the officers own word that you were "speeding". With
this you can go to court and win.
E) Also, join the National Motorists Association. They will help you fight
any future citations and provide a list attorneys if you don't have the time
to do this yourself.
