I have an Escort, Passport 8500 and it is by far the best radar detector I
have ever owned.  I have never owned the V1, but that seems to be, in my
opinion, the only comparable unit without stepping up to car mounted
front/rear units (at least in price, don't know how much better these really
are).  I know some are partial to V1s and some are partial to passports.
There seems to be endless discussion over which is better.  All I can say is
that the 8500 is certainly awesome.   I am a total detector-dependent
driver, but I see it working for me.  To me $300 is less than a good ticket
or 2 can end up costing you over the years with insurance and all.  Not to
mention the fact that I am in NJ, one of the few states where cops are still
big on Xband, at least the state police who use it almost exclusively so
having a radar detector really can save you there.  Local cops have almost
all gone up to K and Ka so they are instant-on capable but even there having
a fast moving car catch a check ahead of you can save your day.  Enough
rambling.
