Working the speedo cable in my own Gen1, I've noticed that the instrument cluster comes out a LOT easier once one part is removed:
At the bottom center of the IC, the SHO cluster has a Low-Coolant display in place of PRNDL.  Hell, I don't need no stinkin'
Low-Coolant Sensor, it hasn't worked anyway.  Once I removed that lamp and housing, the IC went into place easily.  Of course, that
left a rectangular area, lighting up at night under the speedo, where I was seeing inside the cluster.  I kinda like it.

That takes at least 30 minutes, more like an hour to fight the instrument cluster vs the steering column.
