First off, neither Discount tire online, nor Tire Rack, show the YK420. That
tells me it's a generic "jobber" tire to be avoided.
Secondly, Based on experience with the S305s (and the S306 on my wife's
Honda......that I don't care about!!), DON'T buy the YK420 tires.
$132/tire can buy a LOT of really good tires out there!! If you have a
Discount store near you (as I do), the store will honor the Discount
Internet prices (I've bought 4 sets of tires this way through them).
For less than $132/tire, you can get, in the 225/55/16 size, all with Free
Shipping ("a/s" means All-Season):
Kumho Ecsta 712s $88 (I don't care for them, others like them a lot.
Heavy tire!)
Nitto 450 Extreme $89 (a/s, great tire, look cool. SHO folks like 'em,
I have them on my 911)
Yoko ES100 $99 (only $87 @ Tire Rack w/~$8 shipping> Now on my
'94, good tire, looks cool)
BFG KDWS $108 (a/s, look funky, but folks love 'em)
Dunlop SP5000 $109 (a/s, another favorite for all-season use)
Pirelli P7000 $119 (a/s Supersport, also the P7000 Summer. Look cool.
Great tire, I had 'em on my '99)
Dunlop SP8000 $124 (long-time SHO favorite!)
BFG T/A VR/4 $135 (a/s, another long-time SHO favorite!)
BFG KDW $136 ( better for dry & wet, if snow is not an issue, than
the KDWS)
I vote for either the Nitto 450, Yoko ES100, Pirelli P7000 or the KDW.

Subject: [Shotimes] question on Yokohama YK420 tires
My 97 had Yokohama S306 tires on it when I got it. I just discovered that
one of them has enough wear on the inside edge for a bit of chord to show,
so I have to get new tires QUICK. I am interested mostly in wet
performance. I rarely drive on snow or ice, and most of the tires of this
type that have good wet performance seem to do well enough in dry also.
My local Discount Tire has a few likely candidates, and I thought the
Yokohama YK420 looked pretty good, for $132 each. I like to look at the
offerings, tests and comments on TireRack, but this is a new tire and they
don't list it yet. I don't think I have enough time before I have to travel
this weekend to get tires shipped in from TireRack. The only other choice
at Discount Tire that I would consider is the Michelin Pilot XGT H4. I have
had Pilot XGT V4's in the past and liked them. I don't know how much
difference there is with the H4 vs. the V4.
With TireRack I have the additional choices of BF Goodrich Comp T/A VR4 or
Yokohama AVS dB S2.
I'm inclined to go with the Yoko YK420, and wondered if anybody had any
experience with them.
Just by coincidence, the tires on my 90 SHO are also worn out so I have to
have new tires for it also. I'm not driving it much and will either sell it
or give it to my daughter to drive. I can't bear to put junk tires on it so
I am considering the same Yokohamas, or maybe something a little less
expensive like the Dunlop SP Sport A2 or SP Sport 5000. (It's tough to
compare prices when you look at Discount Tire where they have more of a
"final" price vs. TireRack where you have to add in shipping, mounting, and
balancing on top of their prices.)
