>We did this about 30 years ago. We had a machine with a big electric motor in it and a wheel that you put against the car wheel to spin it up to speed, something like 90 mph. There was also a mechanism that clipped to the wheel in place of a hubcap. It had a shaft with some small rings on it sticking out, (almost like a helmet for the Jetsons). The rings controlled a mechanism inside of this big hubcap to move weight around to different parts of the wheel.

We still do that now, in my driveway. That device you are talking about is the
Hunter Balancing System. It used a slip ring with rubber 'feet' to hold the balance
head to various sized wheels. The balance head had the 4 rings in the center,
controlling location and quantity of weight. It tended to get out of adjustment
fairly easily, so when I had the chance to get a used system, I just got the motor
unit. That is a high speed a/c motor...120 volt in my case, which turns the
front/rear (undriven) wheels up to about 75 mph, depending on size and weight
of the wheel. I just use a logic method of weight application and apparent
imbalance to do my wheels....I don't fool with the balance head.

It appears we are back around to the need for another printing of my on-the-car
balance instructions. They are stored in my computer, and have been sent out
several times over the last 5 or 6 years. If a few folks would like me to send them
again, I'll do it. They take up three posts, and each one is a 3 or 4 pager, as
described by Dave Kegel. If they aren't needed, then there is that Delete key.

They were printed in the SHOClub Magazine, last fall and this spring, but if not
everyone gets that, or would like another copy to print out, I'll be glad to send
them to the list.
