[Shotimes] AC clutch

I'm about to replace the AC clutch on my 92.  I have Helms plus the
instructions that came with the parts.  It seems pretty clear.  Just three
questions:
--- It appears the "clutch" action is actually metal-to-metal contact
between the hub and pulley.  Am I missing something?  Really?  Metal to
metal?
--- What items will I need to remove to be able to get at the compressor?
Should I go in from above or below?
--- I have no reason to think there's any problem with the field coil.  But
the kit I bought does include a brand new coil.  Should I do the coil as
long as I'm in there, or leave it alone?
