Thanks to those who helped with tips on replacing the AC clutch. I replaced
both the hub and the pulley. The AC blows cold and the clutch comes on
smoothly now. Thank you! Especially to Dave Kegel and Kevin Airth.
Without people like you, I would not be able to try such things. Thank you!
Swapping the hub is no big deal once the battery is out. The pulley is a
little more work because of the snap ring that holds it in place. To get
enough depth on my snap-ring pliers, I took a straight set and bent them
deeply to 90 degrees. I found I had to tweek them a bit to get just the
right position to open the snap ring. Then when I went to put the ring back
on, I had to tweak the angle of the jaws again.
With a dental mirror and trouble light, it was not too hard to get the snap
ring out. And I'm glad I did. I feel better about having replaced both
sides of the clutch interface.
