I don't think the package tray metal is considered a structural member,
more support for the package tray, speakers, and something for the rear seat
to hang on. It's extremely flimsy (cut mine out of the 89 when I did the
cage, re-welded in later). Very thin sheet metal, doubt it weighed 3 lbs.
BTW I found a black SLO "L" rear package tray for my 89, doesn't have the
big speaker grills like the JBL, and doesn't have the little console with
the flip door. It's 2.35 lbs lighter <g>
