That's exactly right Steve, but if you reread my original note, the
experience was past tense.  This happened easily 5 or 6 years ago now.  I
have not had any issues with the AC (knock on wood) since.

As it turned out, using your note as a guide, what had happened to me was 2)
occurred first.  The listserv helped me diagnose the faulty AC clutch.  I
then had the dealership repair this.  They originally wanted to charge me
for a whole new compressor but I went armed with facts and shamed them into
doing the repair I wanted.  Then when I got the car back they must have
messed up the low pressure setting.  After fixing that, no more freeze up!!
