Exactly what language is your copy of the manual using? Mine is all in
English.
After positioning the three index marks, it is necessary to rotate the belt
and gears in order to take ALL slack out of the belt before applying the
final torque to the timing belt tensioner. Note to all: This is for the
MTX equipped car ONLY, the ATX procedure is different.
With only the spring tension of the tensioner applied to the belt (before
tightening the locking bolt), rotate the crank almost two full rotations
clockwise until the YELLOW mark/notch of the crank damper is on the ) TDC
mark. This is actually 60 D before TDC and is the point at which maximum
pressure is exerted on the belt from the valve springs (transmitted via the
cams and cam sprockets). Tighten the locking bolt, then rotate the crank
back to TDC and verify that your cam index marks are still in place against
the steel backing plates.
It is very important to note two things: 1) The white index marks shall be
disregarded as soon as you rotate the crank - NO EXCEPTIONS, they are
irrelevant at that point and 2) only turn the crank clockwise while
performing the timing belt tensioning adjustment. If you miss your mark,
make two more crank revolutions to get back into position.
As far as running without the crank bolt torqued, I would recommend against
that. The vibrations and stresses on the damper and timing gear are quite
strong and you don't want any play in there that will start the process of
wearing out the key, possibly leading to eventual crank cancer. Get the
replacement bolt first before starting the engine.
Kent, I will send to you by a direct e-mail a .pdf file that has a marked up
copy of the Helms procedure. It was published in the SHO Registry (I
presume) about 10 years ago. If anyone else needs a copy, please e-mail a
request off list.
