F1 is sort of unique though-
1) Don't worry about brand loyalty so much because you know that nothing in
the engine relates to a brand, maybe to an engine shop though. It's more a
matter of team loyalty or driver loyalty.
2) It's a high dollar sport so the fans and groupies are higher class than
some other motorsports. This is either the chicken or the egg but F1 seems
to have attracted more motion picture attention than other motorsports.
3) To me the drivers actually are motivated to win and try hard to win. I
have only attended one F1 race in person, but at that race they had
preliminary events with CanAm cars, vintage cars, etc. Basically they just
play follow-the-leader around the track. (Sounds like Nascar too.) When
the F1 guys got on the track they actually battled for placement. After a
few laps you could go to a good corner or chicane and watch the drivers
battle for position. I enjoyed watching how some drivers could make up time
at the chicane, how the lead would change back and forth every few laps,
etc. Then there was the driver who ran out of gas 100Y from the finish
line, tried to push his car over the finish line, and passed out on the
pavement from the heat. (let's see if anybody is up on their trivia enough
to figure out this one.)
