The brushes look like a block of material with a thick copper wire coming
about 1.25" out one side.  The block seems to be made of a mixture of carbon
and copper (I am guessing) or similar stuff.

The brushes I was sold were oversize.  They were easily ground down to fit.
The final size is about 1/8" thick, 3/8" tall, and 5/8" long.  After a few
seconds with the fine wheel on my bench grinder, I used a hand file to round
the corners.  Then they slid easily into the brass housings on the brush
plate.

Joe why don't you measure the brush size while they are out?  Then maybe
someone will have some luck finding some high copper content brushes for
us??
