There might be a number on the brush.  That number identifies the hardness
of the carbon.
If the brushes are too soft they will eat up the armature.

I have a dead one laying around that I have been planning to revive.  After
I get finished moving I'll take a look at it.

Good job! $8 is better than $150 anyday.
IFIRC the elec shop told me the Ford brushes looked they were
high-copper content, he could tell by the color. He didn't have any in
that size so I used regular all carbon brushes. He promised me they
wouldn't last as long. He was right. Less than half. But only $8.

Joe why don't you measure the brush size while they are out?  Then maybe
someone will have some luck finding some high copper content brushes for
us??
