I have seen one damper that was bad, and it was because it had been hammered onto
the crankshaft with a huge hammer, causing the crank to bulge at the end, and then
the damper was forced farther on, the bulge digging into its tapered hub, creating a
ridge and causing it to not go on all the way, causing crank cancer.  This was a 
BaySHO friend's car that got fixed in 2001 shortly after my bearings were done.

I had to file the crank down in order for another damper to go on properly.

I think that's the only bad one I've ever heard of.  They cost about $300 new at the
dealer.  I was amazed when I found this out.  I loaned him a spare.

As for this car, I don't think they have a clue as to what's going on in the front
of
the engine......!!
