The rubber sediment inside the timing covers is somewhat normal for a high
mileage SHO. Some is from normal wear and tear on the timing belt, some is
from the timing belt being mis-aligned and rubbing against the backstop
(engine side) or the timing cover, and some could have been from a loose
timing belt. If the belt is loose it will smack against the sides of the
timing cover and rub off lots of rubber. You'd have to inspect the timing
belt in order to see what was happening.
In my eyes there is no way that rubber from the crank pulley can get inside
the timing cover. The residue is most likely (99.9% sure) from the timing
belt.
Cracks in the timing cover are normal either from wear and tear or from
people trying to get them off. They are surprisingly brittle and a lot of
people don't realize that the lower and middle timing covers are
interlocked. Makes for a lot of broken timing covers.
As for the bolts... I'm assuming he's refering to the two bolts that hold
the lower timing cover on (situated just behind the crank pulley). If the
bolts were tightened down correctly, the timing pulley would be doing a LOT
(and I mean a lot!) of wobbling to wear the heads down. There's probably a
good inch or so between the bolt heads and the pulley. If the pulley was
doing this you would have surely felt and/or heard it.
My guess is that those two bolts weren't tightened down or came loose and
may have helped cause some of the above mentioned damage.
>oh-- will a crank pulley from a 95 3.2 fit a 93 3.2?
I believe it should, since they are all the same engine... can someone else
confirm this?
