Correct.  The 2 largest locomotive mfrs in the U.S., GM and GE, both use
diesel engines to spin a 'generator' which supplies power to multiple 'DC'
drive motors.  Recently the trend has been to use an 'alternator' (instead
of a generator) to supply power to multiple 'AC induction' drive motors.

My friend is a major-league 'Railfan' and he got me interested in these
behemoths many years ago.
