Do you mean the wire clip that holds the two halves together above the
transmission, or the lever-retainer that holds the top half to the speedo
head?

Anyway, I've had good luck in separating the two halves (lube the wire clip
and wiggle it, it will come out). Then the clip on the speedo head was never
an issue, as the top half of the cable had room to move. IIRC, the lever
gets pulled toward the speedo head, and the cable comes out relatively
easily.

So I was trying to remove this clip last night to lube my speedo cable and I
could not get the stupid clip to release.  Is there some secret to their
removal?  I was pulling quite hard.
