I had a very similar experience back when my car was under the extended warranty. It had to be towed in on a weekend and for three days they could not find a problem, even I told them it was the crank sensor. They were about to give up on it on the follwoing Thursday when it failed to start and left them a code.

warranty and the dealer was trying to figure it out. I had to bring in
print-outs from several list members and was finally able to convince them
to replace the CPS. They weren't finding any evidence on their own leading
them to suspect that it was bad. They replaced the fuel pump though and
fuel pump relay (CCRM I guess), probably based on the 542 code. :)
