I have the same car, '93 Automatic.  I've replaced my brake switch twice in
the 4 years I've owned the car.  It is up under the dash a little bit.  You
can sort of get to it by laying on your back on the floormat but you can
also take the lower dashboard cover off to assist.  It's about a 5 minute
job all in all.  Just disconnect the old and reconnect the new...not much
more than that.  As for shifting without it.  With the car off but the key
turned to the Accessories position, I believe it is, you can shift the car
to neutral and start it.  If you have the original car manual, it actually
tells you this.  Hope this helps.
