Actually Don Donelson did it, I was in the passenger seat.  But the
ratcheting effect did work, that being to pull up on the clutch pedal.
Without removing the slack, the pressure plate doesn't disengage from the
flywheel enough and hence you get that aweful resistance when trying to get
the tranny in gear.  FWIW, I'm running with the normal Motorcraft fluids.
