OK, here is the straight skinny as best as I can remember.
This was a friend of mine, he helped with the first
convention, and had about the first set of Logicams
installed. Stage I if I remember. I still have a video of
the entire install we were going to sell as a project, but
never got around to it.
The night the car was completed, we took a ride on the
access road up to no more than about 80 mph and the car ran
good, but it was impossible to tell if it was any better. I
remember the idle as just a tiny bit lumpier than stock.
My friend had a G-tech and did some tests, but he never did
any in my presence. When he told me the results I knew they
were bogus, and the procedure he described indicated he was
doing some things that could really fool a G-tech.
Later, we were both at the same drag strip and my basically
stock 89 took his car three for three, and I have never
broken into the 14's with my car (three 15.0's at three
different tracks...guess I need to go to Ron Porters track
to get into the 14's...on a night with perfect weather!) I
think I did 15.20's that day. I remember the announcer
saying my car ran real good for a sedan, and he intended it
as a complement and I took it that way.
Just so I report everything, my friend claimed that he had a
bad clutch that day the prevented him from pulling the big
numbers or getting past my car. At Atlanta he claimed some
big numbers on the front and back stretch at Atlanta Motor
Speedway. Anyone on the track with him at the same time
that can confirm this? Also, I don't remember him at the
drag strip in Atlanta. Ron, was he there? I was, but I
don't remember his black car.
I never saw anything that would indicate that car was
anywhere near as fast as he claimed. No time slips,
nothing. I didn't believe it then, and don't now.
I don't think he was trying to deceive anyone, I think he
got some bad numbers and wanted to believe them.
At the time I was just a club member that had helped put on
the first convention, and hadn't started writing for the
club yet.
