[Shotimes] A/C

I do a mix of things. I found a local shop that I've used for A/C recharges,
and he does it rather reasonably. When I lived in Louisville, the local Ford
dealer was to be avoided, but the L/M dealer was good, and they did a lot of
work on the a/c system in my '89. They were the ones who new to check the
lines under the battery very carefully, and found those very tiny leaks.

As I tell folks, though. If you need a/c work beyond just a recharge, plan
on spending at least a $1,000! To get my '89 back in shape with COLD a/c, it
cost $1,800 for everything back about 5 years ago. To be fair, though, the
last time I had spent any money on the a/c in that car was 6 years before
that, when they replaced the seals in '92.

FWIW, if I had an '89-'93 SHO with R12, and it needed a compressor and/or
other expensive components, I would convert to R134-A.

My local ford dealer (won't even call them stealer) has been great so
far - It might be worth a trip. They'd probably be pretty reasonable -
I'll let you all know what they say. BTW - these guys know I'm not
much of a car guy and I'm doing all the work myself - and they have
still been totally cool to work with. I have not had them do any work
to my car yet - and they have not been pushing me into letting them.
In fact, I don't think the mechanics here really want to work on the SHO
anyways. The one I talked to said "those things are an SOB to work on"!
- Making me feel even better about doing all this stuff myself. Long
story short: Ron, point taken and heeded!

There are things on a car that I will fix/maintain/replace, and other
things
that I pay people with the right tools to do.

Messing with the a/c system is one thing that IMHO is better left to
professionals.

Plus, you can't buy R12 unless you are certified to work with it, it's
not
available at parts stores. And it's pricey when you do find a stash
somewhere.

Thanks! - I'm glad I didn't just dive in and try the high pressure side.
Sounds like I would have blown myself up!!

I traced the line to the firewall on the passengers side and will go
from there. I'll study the helms a little too before I do anything.

I checked again tonight and got the same 50 degree reading. Should read
30-something, right?? Outside temp was about 76-78. I let it run for a
while with A/C on full. When I was done I backed the car up a little
bit and it looked like I had a condensation drip in the driveway. It
was about a 5" round puddle under the tank (compressor??) in the front
by the coolant overflow bottle. This tank was also covered with
condensation.

When you buy a can of R-12 - Does it come with the proper fitting to
fill?

I'm still trying to keep this simple. The car is running so good right
now, I'm just trying to fix a few small things before I dive into
brakes, suspension, etc.

'93 MTX, fresh 60k+, new rod bearings, bone stock. Feeling pretty
pumped because after the rod bearing job and replacing the oil pan - I'm
not leaking a drop of anything. I think this says my main rear bearing
is OK.

Anyway............thanks again to all!!

Kerry,

You will want to refill at the accumulator/dryer
connection, near the firewall on the passenger side.
That, I believe, is the low pressure, feed side of the
A/C Compressor. The high pressure connection is near the
battery - you don't want to fill there.

I had a friend that hooked me up a few years ago - he had
some $5.95 bottles of R-12 from Gold Circle (very old)!
But they got my old 90 Sable wagon cold!

Good luck,
