[Shotimes] Heating Problem

Replacing the heater core does no require cutting the heater box.  With the
blend-door motor apparatus removed, the heater core simply slides upward out
of the box.

Where you get into cutting and resealing the box is when/if you have to
replace the AC core.

My 91 developed a blend-door-motor problem a couple of years ago.  This was
a car with most of the rest of the AC system amputated.  As long as the
heater box was out, I took the opportunity to remove the AC core.  (No sense
dragging interior air over a dead AC core, I figured.)   So I went through
the cut-and-reseal process.  You'll need a little silicone caulk, a hacksaw
blade, and a couple of bolt/washer/nut sets.  The heater box was designed to
support the cut/reseal process, so in the end you have a box with good
integrity.

certain way to remove the core. The Helm shop manual shows where to make the
cuts. The core and plastic box are installed as one piece. You then reseal
the area you cut open after installing the new core.

 Heater cores are available in Aluminum or brass. My original in my 93 was
Aluminum but  the aftermarket replacement was brass. It's been fine for
several years and 45K miles or so.
