Seems like everyone that every met Steve McQ liked him. Didn't seem to be to caught up with himself. I guess if you are cool, you don't have to ACT like you are.

Hehehe, in the early 70s as I recall Steve came up to Alaska as our guest to
show the locals how to ice race on our frozen lake. Someone let him use a
monster TransAm, 455, huge spiked tires, no muffler, a real beast. He drove
it a couple laps and said "forget it". He took someone elses dirt bike with
spiked tires and showed some real bike skills; he was a master of the
motorcycle. The party afterwards was something to remember, that guy was as
cool as they come. A year later Swede Savage came up, the year before he
died I think, and I got to race against him, I was driving Satch Carlson's
turbo Saab Sonnet which was wicked fast on the ice, Swede was driving
someone's 911, which I should have been able to beat. Not a chance; he had
no fear, to go with reflexes that i could only dream of. We didn't need no
stinking roll cages in those days; tech inspection was to make sure nothing
was going to fall off.............sometimes I think the good old days were
really good.
