He was indeed an enjoyable writer and a helluva nice guy. I met him in 1986
at the Detroit GP when it was still an F1 race. I was a fledgling motorsport
photographer and he welcomed me very graciously as a member of the
journalistic community while the majority of the old media hounds were rather
disdainful, stand-offish, and snooty.
I believe he got into a problem with an under-age au-pair at home in Alaska.,
after which AutoWeek (under the newly minted stewardship of 'media mogul' to
be, Keith Crane) dropped him like a hot potato.
One of his funniest bits was a column he wrote about an imagined tale of two
motorsport journalists, (he and Denise McCluggage) within which he refered to
her as Valise Portmanteau and himself as Satchel.

Whatever happened to Satch Carlson? Didn't he get into some
trouble? Forgot exactly what, but I enjoyed his writing.
