Jim, One way to tell is look for the next time a major virus hits. Go to
the free AV support web site and see how long it takes to get posted
compared to say Symantec. Since I get the NAV for free at work, I don't
bother with the other stuff.
There are a lot people doing good work and don't charge any license or
support fees. Maybe this outfit is one of them, I don't know. For
instance, I run SquirrelMail on my server, which is an open source group
that provides an IMAP based web mail function. I now use this exclusively
over outlook express because I can get my mail from any computer. This
webmail function runs on top of another free piece of software called
Mercury/32 mail server. Apache is probably the best known of all free
software. I highly recommend all of this stuff.
