[Shotimes] shifter cable problems

I'm trying to fix my shift problem. Shifter moves but doesn't move car into 
gear at all. I'm looking for these cables. I've take off the console, shifter 
knob, and boot and folded back the carpet near dash but I don't see these 
cables at all. There is a plastic piece of the right side of the floor pan that I 
guess is the heat duct. I just want to see what is the problem. The chilton 
says I should be able to see the cables already. Do I need to take off this 
plastic piece to see them?
