[Shotimes] OT: (Was: Sorry Ron) Dumping AOL

Three things:

One is that I feel that $49.95/month is well worth it for having broadband
over dial-up. It's especially important now that I do much of my work from
home (well, and I'm now reimbursed as a home office expense!!).

The second is that we used to have a 2nd phone line for the PC. That alone
had a total of about $38/month ($34-35 base charge, plus taxes). So, in my
mind, it was well worth spending about $12/month extra for broadband, as we
then dropped the 2nd phone line.

The third is that the $49.95 SBC broadband (or any of them, AFAIK) also are
an ISP, and SBC also gives you at least 5 e-mail IDs free. At that point,
you could drop your AOL or whatever, so that $21.95 can go away. Yes, you
need to change e-mail IDs, but IMHO using AOL e-mail IDs for business (also
using Hotmail, Yahoo) is very unprofessional-looking (not just my opinion, I
hear it from many people).

So, in my case, paying $38/month for a 2nd phone line, plus $18/month for
Prodigy dial-up ISP (total: $56) went to a single charge of $49.95 for DSL
broadband. And if you aren't home, you can still get your e-mail from any
web browser.

In reality, we kept the Prodigy-now-SBC-dial-up service, as I needed a full
ISP for my laptop on business trips. SBC still would have let us keep our
old Prodigy e-mail IDs, since they bought Prodigy.

Interesting................We have been thinking about getting a different
Internet Provider, but we (my husband and I) both have email addresss for
our
business.

SBC sounds good, but the $29.95 price is only for the first year. I am too

tight to spend the money they want for some of this stuff. I refuse to get
anything more than basic cable because of the price. DSL and Broadband and
all
that jazz just seem so pricey. I guess one of these days I will have to
give
in, but for now, I am going to spend my "extra cash" on SHO related items.
Oh
yeah, and beer!
