[Shotimes] muffler shops and flex pipe

The Summit Turbos are fine. Sure, they may only last 2-3 years in the salt
belt, but you can also spend $75 on a Dynomax muffler that also rusts out in
2-3 years. Nothing wrong with them. So what if you have to have them
replaced every now & then? I had Thrush Turbos ($16/apiece, like the
Summits) on my '99, and they were in fine shape after 1.5 years up here in
Detroit. The car has been in Louisville for the last two years, but those
mufflers are now 3.5 years old.
The trick is to get the biggest, fattest resonator/glasspack welded in that
will fit, or even get a couple welded in that space (where the stock
resonator is at). My former '95 had VERY cheap glasspacks for mufflers, but
with a fat resonator I had NO rasp at all.
There's nothing "custom" about installing those mufflers on a SHO.....any
muffler shop can do it. And basically, assuming you get a bigger resonator
for $20-30, the labor for the resonator and muffler installation should be
easily under $100. If not, shop around.
Don't need a 3" pipe. Others may disagree, but I agree on keeping the donut.
You can buy a lot of $7 NAPA donuts for the cost of a flex pipe and getting
it installed. Just make sure to get the correct donut:
FELPRO: 60641
NAPA: 31372
FORD: E6DZ-5E241-A
Which is kind of a "cone" donut, and not a traditional exhaust donut.
You must have a Gen 1 with the downturned pipes? Any muffler shop can
replicate that with pipe if you want. That is not "custom" work.

I still have the stock mufflers on after 13 years, and
they have finally started to rust through
I called the muffler shop today to set up an
appointment to have them put on my Summit Turbos. He
wasn't happy about my choice of mufflers. I picked
them because the shoforum guys seem to like them, and
they were so cheap I didn't have to think twice about
it. In fact, they were so cheap I might get another
kind of muffler and forget about them. I was just
going to have the summits installed onto the stock
tailpipe.
The muffler guy said they would be rusted in a year.
That only bothers me because I would have to talk to
this guy next year. I have had previous dealings with
these guys, and they are competent. Otherwise, I
woulda hung up on the guy, he was a jerk. They're the
only people around that advertise custom muffler
installation.
He also seemed to think that a flex pipe would cause
vibration, and recommended that I keep the donut seal
and hope that it doesn't fall apart again.
They advertise that they install 3" exhaust systems.
Is there a respectable purpose for such a thing, or do
you just put one on your 1500cc honda to get that
lovely buzzing sound?
Should I junk the Summits and get a better muffler?
What muffler? Also, I was trying to find a 2 1/4
tailpipe that bent down like the stock one, and didn't
whistle or sound like a train. Wooo-Wooo.
