Another way of getting the vin number is on the body panels. On some models, unsure of what years and which vehicles, there is a label on every panel that has the vin number on it, so covering the one on the dash would not be 100% effective! Look on the bumpers, maybe right under the edge of them, on the bottom of the doors, the inside edges of the fenders, trunk lid, hood, sometimes even on the inner edges of the quarter panels at the trunk opening. Unless the panels have been replaced, the full vin will appear on the decal. My Mustang is a 90 model, it has these labels on it. It is also a way to see if a used car has been painted, or if panels have been replaced due to a wreck.

I locked my keys in the trunk of my Lincoln LS V8 last week. Called a
towing company, they came and got into the car, but the trunk wouldn't pop
open because the car "knew" it was broken into. Apparently you have to
unlock the car properly for the electronic trunk release to work. The seats
fold down but you have to get into the trunk to release them.
So I called the local lincoln dealership and they offered to cut me a key
to open the trunk... but I of course had to bring proof of ownership with
me. They couldn't cut a key for the ignition because it would have to be
programmed. They did cut the key for the trunk though, and did it for free
at that!
