Well I will, unless you want me to tell you what to do to fix it the first
time.......
;-)
Change the starter drive. Remove the starter, and take it apart. Take out the two
long bolts at the brush end that hold the whole thing together, remove the screw or
bolt that holds the drive actuator cover on, then remove the drive end. Remove the
C clip that holds the drive onto the starter driveshaft, and replace it with another
one you bought at your friendly NAPA store for about 8 or 10 bucks. You can reuse
the C clip if you don't destroy it in removing it. Use a pair of slip joint pliers
and tap it off by putting one jaw on one side and one on the other of the shaft, and
hit the handle end gently with something broad, like the side of a hammer head (or
your own head......ROTFL!!!). If you only hit one side of the pliers, everything
slips off and you might hurt your fingers.
Reassemble in the same order of disassembly.
Fixed.
You're welcome.
I've been 'rebuilding' my own starters this way (for 5 bucks for drives) since the
'60s. The Lowrider and Black Diamond both have 'second life' starters I've fixed by
swapping drives.
One time the Boss, back in '75, popped its clutch equalizer shaft and had no clutch
linkage. I lived 35 miles away from the Travis AFB auto shop, and was in an
apartment...no place to fix it at home. So, I drove it through two complete cities,
one AFB, and 30 miles of interstate highway by shutting it off at every stoplight,
and starting it in first gear. The drive died about 3/4ths of the way home, after I
discovered the auto shop was closed for the day......Grrrrrr! I jacked it up in the
middle of the parking lot, swapped drives (had my terrific '69 Country Squire at the
time), and discovered there was a simple fix for the clutch, which I could have done
without going anywhere......Grrrrrrr!
