[Shotimes] '96 brake upgrade

Just getting to this one.....

Well, the rotors will not warp because they are "too small". FWIW, I went
55K on my '89 before I had the rotor rust recall done, which replaced the
then-stock, original rotors (which were still fine). Those new rotors were
turned at 128K, and were still on the car at 182K when I sold it (although
were a bit off). They had done two tracks and a few more dragstrip days.

Others have commented on the parts, but the key used parts for a pre-'94 are
the knuckles (from a '94-95 SHO or others), the caliper brackets, and some
calipers (or get mew/rebuilt ones). Then you need the 598-size pads, as well
as the '96 rotors. Get with Al Fitz or Kirk, you can probably get the used
parts pretty cheaply.

The reason to do this is to increase your brake capacity. Now, for pure
stopping ability, the '96 brakes will perform the same wrt stopping
distances for one or two hard stops in a row. Now, do 10 hard stops in a row
(on a track, or coming down a mountain road), and that's where the '96
brakes will out-brake the originals.

On a subjective note, the '96 brakes have a better "feel" in street driving.
They feel more positive, and less brake pedal is needed to slow down at a
given rate. This is not "better braking" per se, but it is a more positive
feeling for your driving experience.

I would do it, you will enjoy your car more!

Subject: [Shotimes] '96 brake upgrade

Hey all,

I have a '93MTX w/ 114k on the clock. Engine is good, time to move on to
the
brakes, suspension, etc. Rotors are extremely grooved and in need of some
serious attention.

I was trying to explain to my 18 yr old son (he'll be helping me do this
hopefully) why I need to do the '96 upgrade. I didn't have a very good
answer
except the rotors are too small and will warp again if I just put stock ones
on. What is the short and sweet answer as to why I need to do this??

Also, I know there is a lot of parts involved in doing this that I wouldn't
know if they hit me upside the head - So........Is there a complete kit
available? If so, what's the total $$ amount to do this?? Alan Fanning
recently tried to explain some of the things involved but at least half of
the
stuff he told me went directly over my head.

He said George (I think) wrote a good FAQ about this and I will check out
soon. Is it just the front rotors that get upgraded?? Anyway....I would
love
to know:

1.	Why do I need to do this?
2.	How much - ballpark at least?

Thanks,

Kerry
