Joe,  You are the defacto expert on the BSC, so I bow to you.

I had reported a while back that I too got bitten by this problem. 
Interestly enough, the problem has not manifested itself recently.  When
it does happen, it's because the ambient temperature is very high.  95 or
higher.  So the problem appears to be heat related.

I picked up a used BSC recently.  In looking at the design, the part lives
in a hostile environment.  For instance, the circuity is air cooled by the
blower itself.  But because there is no air filter before the blower, crap
can get caught in the fins, minimizing the cooling efficiency of the heat
sink.  I'm tempted to pull the module anyway and give it a good cleaning
to make sure there are no obstructions.

If nothing else, it appears that this is just another part to add to the
list of items you'll eventually need to replace.
