It is possible to get a court-ordered title; at least in Ohio. When I was
in my 4x4 phase I had a Suburban. Long story short: when it came time
to do the body, it was easier to find a rust-free shell than fix what was
there. So I found one. The guy who switched them forgot to swap the
VIN tags. (I know that's illegal) The old body was crushed before we
realized what happened. I just figured that I'd never be able to sell it.
Fast forward 5 or 6 years. A guy at work asks me if I want to sell it.
After I explain the problem to him he asks a friend of his (who happened
to be a bailif going to law school) what could be done. He found out
about a court-ordered title. Basically, they did a search to make sure
the vehicle that the body came from wasn't stolen, then I wrote up a
brief summary of what happened, and it was presented to a judge.
It didn't hurt that the bailif's father was the judge, but there was
nothing illegal about what they did. Of course, I don't know how you
would initiate the process if you didn't "know somebody".
Anyways, I was told that that kind of title was primarily used for
abandoned vehicles and such. It just happened to help me out too.
