Yep, it's easier to just buy a whole axle assembly ($99 at AutoZone for my
'95, IIRC) then it is to tear the old one apart.

Who knows how long the boot was torn on the '95 (they found it during the
tranny rebuild), and on my '89, I drove around with two torn boots for about
9 months or so.

I have not had the problem, but the CV will start snap-crackle-popping
noticeably before it goes for good, so you do have warning.

I drove from Tulsa to Illinois on my torn CV boot.  There still is grease
all over but it did not fail.  For the price of a rebuilt one don't mess
with just a boot.
