Where I use to work they used a naphtha type solvent to wipe off the top of
the batteries during assembly. For some reason after using this for 40
years they decided it was a hazardous solvent, benzene I think. Any way
they went to WD 40. Bought 55 gallon drums of it at around $600 a barrel.
Worked good as a solvent.

They were suppose to keep it agitated as the WD 40 component would settle
out. They never did and usually threw away the last 5 galloons or so. This
was a white milky liquid. Still got 5 gallons or so around..... Anyway it
is also a good cleaner/solvent.
