This got some mention on CNN too. It depends on how you define
sports sedan. But that article talks about all types of vehicles.
I just think of it as a slushbox with 6 speeds instead of 5. They
cite improve fuel economy as the main reason. The development of
that transmission will cost $720M.
If you want to talk sports sedan, then have a look at the Alfa Romeo
156 sedan. It uses an F1 style paddle shifter that operates a
sequential gearbox using an electronically actuated clutch instead
of a torque converter.
Up until last season in Formula One, that type of transmission was
actually governed by an automatic shifting program that basically
made an F1 into a big fast go kart. FIA decided to remove the
automatic shifting capability but still left traction control in
place (Except for start of race).
