[Shotimes] ABS functioning properly?

All the talk last week or so about the prop valve plugs and ABS got
me thinking whether my ABS is functioning correctly. They have
activated on me a few times this past winter, and they didn't feel
right to me. But because this is my first car with ABS, I'm not really
sure what they should feel like.
My thought is they should feel like dit-dit-dit-dit-dit; a very fast
pulsating of the pedal. Mine feel like dot-------dot-------dot. A pretty
slow pulsating feeling. And they seemed to activate when I didn't
think they should. But that doesn't really mean anything, considering
the road was wet every time.
I know all the sensors are intact, because I did lots of brake work last
summer and visually inspected them. But I did noticed some metal shavings
on a couple of the sensor ends. I tried to clean it off as best I could.
Could that have any effect on the operation? Or am I looking for some-
thing else? Could somebody tell me again, or point me to, the procedure
for running the diagnostic on them? I wasn't paying attention the last
time it came up.
