Wow! Not a bad fine! I got almost half that for doing 72 in a 55!

About 10 years ago I was in Washington D.C. for the weekend visiting my
(then) girlfriend who was working there. Late Sunday night I left for home
in northern NJ. When I got to the familiar roads of NJ I decided to "kick
it
up a few notches". In no time I was cruising at 130+ mph in the SHO. The
highway
separates into 3 express lanes and 3 local lanes with a guard rail between
them. I was in the left-most lane of the express lanes - the #6 lane, if
you will.

After about 15 or 20 minutes of this high-speed run a bright
light shone on my head and the rear view mirror. My heart stopped, my
stomach sank, and I reluctantly looked in the rear view mirror. There was
nobody behind me for miles!! My next thought was the light was coming from
above, perhaps a helicopter or maybe the alien abduction tractor-beam of a
UFO. I slid the moonroof visor back and glanced to the heavens - nothing
there
either. Then I figured I must be generating a tremendous amount of
electromagnetic energy (1.21 JigaWatts or more) due to the SHO slicing thru
the air at a high rate. But, just then the bright light went out.

During this whole time I had let the car slow down to 100 mph. I looked in
all of my mirrors and through the moonroof again, and seeing nothing I took
'ol whitey back up to 130 large. This continued for another 10-15 minutes
until the bright light reappeared. Instictively I looked in my rear view
mirror and this time there were 3 bright lights........then the sparkly red
lights
came on. Oh joy.

I got three summonses that evening - speeding (131 mph in a 55 mph zone),
failure to stay
right, and failure to signal. Because of the magnitude of the excess
speeding the "court appearance required" box was checked. The state trooper
said he had been chasing me for 47 miles. He was on the shoulder of local
lanes in a
hiding spot when he saw me blast by at twice the rate of
everyone else. The chase was on, but he had to accelerate to 130mph, and
then go faster than that to actually close the the gap between us. He said
that when he caught up to me
he initially only used the spotlight because he was afraid I'd go faster if
he used the red lights.

Every so often there's an opening in the guard rail and a small
sign that says "For Official Use Only". He had to slow down to practically
0
mph to slip thru one of these openings, and that's when he turned the
spotlight off. Then he had to acclerate back to 130mph plus some more so
he could catch up to me again. He wouldn't tell me what his top speed was,
he
only said, "Fast enough to catch you".

In court I plead guilty to the 'speeding' and 'failure to signal' summonses,
but argued with the judge
on the 'failure to stay right' summons. "Soooooo, if I was in the SLOW lane
doing 131mph, that would be OK, and I wouldn't have gotten this
summons?!?!?!?" Judges don't like
when you argue (sarcastically) with their logic. I argued more, he yelled
louder, and this continued back and forth until he finally slammed his gavel
on the desk. The 'failure to signal' summons was because I didn't use my
directional while pulling onto the shoulder at 10mph with the cop 5 feet off
my rear bumper.

I expected the worst AND thousands of dollars in fines, but jail time never
enetered my mind. I brought my checkbook and 3 credit cards to court.
After the judge slammed his gavel and gave me another earful of his
'condescending-father-knows-best-attitude' he instructed me to pay the court
$400-something in fines and court costs. FOUR HUNDRED dollars - that's
it????? Yes your honor, I have learned my lesson. I will never speed
again. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
