[Shotimes] HELP with no-start

Steve,

There are two bolts that hold in the starter. One of them has a stud on the
head of the bolt to hold the negative battery cable. Remove the nut and the
battery cable and then remove the bolt. The other bolt is a normal one.
(I have had my wife's starter out and back in so many times I can do it in
my sleep)

Jim

So, I could barely get the car started after work tonight to get it home.
Had to have someone turn the ignition while I beat the starter (and/or
solenoid) with my tire iron.

Now does anyone think it's the starter? I do.

So I jack the car up (safely with stands and wheel chocks, of course ;^) and
take a look. My handy-dandy repair manual says to remove the upper and
lower starter retaining bolts, but it doesn't say how many there are. I see
two clearly, and one that appears to be a bolt hole with a broken-off stud
inside.

What's up with that?

Any info appreciated. If it wasn't getting so dark I'd just go out and
start working. Unfortunately I know I'd never get it back together with my
little flashlight ;^)

So, my car's being a little bitch again.

Last night I decided I would tinker with it in the garage. Got home from
work, shut it off. Backed the truck out of the garage, went to start the
SHO, and nothing. No cranking, no starter whirring, etc.

Battery voltage seems fine. It's not even trying to draw much voltage when
I turn the key (only drops down about .5V).

The starter is a reman that was put in about 5 years ago, has about 60k
miles on it.

Here's what may be the key to figuring this out: the car does this when hot,
really hot. If I let it cool down, it tends to start (although a bit
slowly). It has now repeated this three times; hot = no start, wait =
eventual start.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks as always,
